Dr Robert Dawborn specialises in Complex PTSD

Relationship Therapy

Dr Dawborn’s approach to Psychotherapy, including Couple Counselling is based on contemporary relationship theory including Psychoanalytic Self PsychologyProcess Oriented Psychology and Systemic Family Therapy.

When working with couples, Dr Dawborn’s initial focus is on understanding the perspectives and experiences of the two people involved. Rather than making a judgement about who is “right or wrong” therapy involves developing an understanding of how the individual perspectives and experiences interact to create the couple’s issues.

A central goal of therapy is to provide tools and perspectives which facilitate the management of strong emotions, help with reality testing and which lead to effective communication and increased intimacy.

Relationship Counselling doesn’t have to be about staying together. It can also focus on effective parenting or effective separation.

When children are involved it makes a huge difference if you can work together effectively as parents even when separating or divorcing. It is still possible to remain friends and have the best possible outcome for everyone involved including the children.

So Relationship or Marriage Counselling can involve work on parenting and on mediation and conflict resolution. Even if separation or divorce is the pathway, effective communication and better relationships is still a worthwhile goal.

If both members of the couple or partnership can’t attend therapy together-individual therapy can still make a difference.

If either of the persons involved have complex and longstanding issues-individual therapy may be more appropriate.
